After more than 25 years, James Turrell’s Rodin Crater still isn’t open to the public. The artist considers the light plane’s he flies to be an extension of his studio. Spaces have been excavated under the bowl of the crater with light admitted in highly controlled ways in order to heighten a viewer’s understanding of the sky.
